NEW DELHI: The police on Friday registered an FIR against an unknown person after senior lawyer
Harish Salve was allegedly threatened for defending the director of the film 'Padmaavat' in a recent court case, news agencies have reported.
Salve received a phone call on his office landline and was allegedly threatened for speaking in favour of the film, PTI reported.
Police said they are probing the matter.
The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the ban on the release of 'Padmaavat' imposed by the governments of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh, allowing for an all-India release on January 25.
A bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud observed that the film was cleared by the
Central Board of Film Certification with a U/A certificate for an all-Indian screening keeping in mind the provisions of the Cinematograph Act.
Arguing on behalf of the film's director
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Salve had contended that the film formed a part of the filmmaker's freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by the Constitution.
Several fringe groups oppose 'Padmaavat' alleging it distorts history and shows the Rajput community in a bad light.
