"The Yogi government believes only in one mantra across the state - development," said UP BJP spokesman Chandra Mohan.
NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered fast-tracking of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) project in Rae Bareli which the Congress has been accusing the central government of derailing. The foundation stone of the project was laid in 2013 by then Congress president and local MP, Sonia Gandhi.

The CM has directed that outpatient department (OPD) facility be made operational at the AIIMS from July this year while medical education be started by September 2019.

The 600-bed super speciality hospital would however be ready only by March 2020, Adityanath was told on Thursday at a high-level review meeting, which was also attended by an additional secretary in the Union health ministry and the state medical education minister, Ashutosh Tandon.

"We are pleased that our party's efforts and pressure have led to deadlines being fixed now by the government to complete this project in the interest of the people of Rae Bareli and around. I wish to thank the chief minister for this," Aditi Singh, the Congress MLA from Rae Bareli, told ET. The Congress had earlier termed the delay in the Rs 823-crore project 'political vendetta', questioning the speed being shown in comparison to set up an AIIMS in Gorakhpur, which Adityanath represented in the Lok Sabha for years.

"The Yogi government believes only in one mantra across the state - development," said UP BJP spokesman Chandra Mohan. "We will ensure both the Gorakhpur and Rae Bareli AIIMS hospitals come up with speed."

The OPD building has come up at the site, but ET found during a visit last month shrubs had grown almost till the height of the building which was locked and its paint was peeling off. Construction of the main hospital building is still to start.
