Sir — This refers to the editorial, “The pilgrim’s progress” (January 18). The abolition of the Haj subsidy, coming in the wake of the Supreme Court’s order of 2012, has adversely affetced the have-nots in the community as they were the deserving beneficiaries of the financial assistance coming from the Government. In turn, the aid even helped those who had inadequate financial resources to bear the expenses for the Haj pilgrimage, one of the prime religious duties. Hence, the abolition should better have come with exempting the financially weak section from its enforcement.
