With chaos reigning in Vyttila due to the serpentine queues of vehicles on all the four sides of the junction that is barricaded for flyover work, more road medians will be removed during the coming days to regulate the traffic flow.
A senior traffic police official said that power connection to the high-mast lights and CCTVs installed by the Motor Vehicles’ Department at the junction had been disconnected and they would be dismantled soon. The signal-lights system would be relocated to make way for traffic. Steps were under way to ensure space for two-lane traffic on either side of the NH bypass.
This follows huge traffic snarls and accidents occurring in the vicinity of the construction sites where a flyover and metro pillar are coming up. Thursday witnessed a phenomenal increase in snarls and this extended well into the night. This invited criticism that the police were unable to curb parking by lorries and other vehicles on service roads which could be used to divert vehicles. Indiscriminate parking and the NHAI’s delay in repairing damaged parts of the service roads were contributing to the chaos in and around Vyttila, sources said.
District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla will convene a meeting of stakeholders on Sunday. They include officials of the PWD (NH wing), which is building a six-lane flyover at the junction, the traffic police, residents’ associations and representatives of different organisations.
