Incident happened on Tuesday when the victim was alone at home

A 63-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the gang rape of his 15-year-old neighbour in her house in Chattarpur a day earlier, the police said on Friday. The second accused is on the run.

Mohd Islam (45) and Ramjani barged into the victim’s house while her mother was at work on Tuesday and her siblings had gone out to play. The accused allegedly gagged the teenager and raped her, the police said.

The minor lives in a shanty close to Chattarpur metro station. Her family comprises her mother, who is a daily wage labourer, and two siblings.

“The men beat her and threatened her with dire consequences before leaving the house,” said the police, adding that they left the injured girl inside and fled.

The girl told her mother about the incident and they approached the police. The woman submitted a written complaint on her daughter’s behalf, based on which a case was registered. Medical examination confirmed sexual assault.

“We have registered a case under Sections 376(D) [gang rape] and 34 [common intention] of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences [POCSO] Act at Vasant Kunj [South] police station,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Milind Dumbere.

“We raided the houses of the accused but neither of them were home. Several teams were formed to nab them. Ramjani was arrested from Chattarpur on Wednesday with help of local inputs,” he said, adding that several teams have been formed to trace Islam.
