As many as 215 high school powerlifters will compete in the fourth annual Coyote Classic Powerlifting Meet in Alice Saturday.
The early-season girls and boys high school powerlifting meet is set for 9 a.m. at William Adams Middle School.
In all, some 13 schools are participating in the meet. Some of the local schools competing include Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco, Agua Dulce, Beeville, Freer, Robstown, Falfurrias, Three Rivers, West Oso, London and of course Alice.
The meet is the first of the season for the Alice boys. Some of the team’s early-season favorites to contend for a shot at regionals are juniors A.J. Moreno and Miguel Gonzalez. Moreno lifts in the 165-pound weight class and Gonzalez lifts in the 114-pound weight class, Alice boys powerlifting coach Ryan Ueckert said.
The Alice girls already have one meet under their belts, and just that one competition was enough for three lifters to already lift qualifying totals to advance to the Texas High School Woman’s Powerlifting Association regional meet in March. Alice High School lifters Gabby Canales, Alex Herrera and Julie Sepulveda turned in qualifying totals at the Skidmore-Tynan meet last week.
Lifting in Alice’s first powerlifting meet of the season at Skidmore-Tynan High School last Thursday, Canales, a state qualifier a year ago, placed second in the 165-pound weight class, but her three-lift weight total of 890 was enough to qualify her to the Texas High School Woman’sPowerlifting Association regional meet later this season. The top finishers at the regional meet, of course, are given a shot at lifting at the state finals. Herrera won the 97-pound weight class with a 555-pound total and Sepulveda totaled 920 to win the 220-pound weight class.
