The two were critically injured in the attack and succumbed to the injuries while they were being rushed to the hospital. The attack has been condemned by the government with Balochistan CM terming it an act of "cowardice and terrorism".
Previously the polio vaccination teams used to be provided with security as well but that was withdrawn as it would attract unnecessary attention towards them, however, the recent attack might increase the need for security once again.
The police are investigating the case and the hunt to nap the culprits is on. Both the culprits had managed to flee the spot after the shooting. Quetta was having three-day national campaign to immunise the children against polio.
In the previous year, Pakistan had 8 reported cases of polio and even the presence of one such case makes true the possibility of the disease striking back. That is why WHO has been stressing on the complete eradication of the disease. At present, other than Pakistan, only two countries have reported cases of polio: Afghanistan and Nigeria. Though Nigeria reported 0 cases of polio in 2017, Afghanistan had reported 13 such cases.
