In the wake of the recent spate of attacks on police personnel by rowdies, Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar has directed all senior officers to put in place stringent measures to prevent such incidents in future.
At a meeting on Friday evening, he told them to intensify night patrolling and prepare a list of rowdies in their respective divisions.
“Officers have been instructed to immediately round up rowdies and tighten security on night beats. We have asked officers to talk to the personnel and give them inputs on dealing with such situations. We have also instructed them to open fire on criminals if they find themselves in adverse situations,” said Mr. Kumar.
In the wee hours on Thursday, two constables of Kodigehalli police station were attacked by four armed men who snatched one rifle before escaping. The attack took place at Tata Nagar. On Wednesday night, seven men had attacked a constable at J.J. Nagar.
The meeting followed a letter issued by the commissioner on January 18. In the letter addressed to all the Additional Commissioners of Police and Deputy Commissioners of Police, Kumar has stated that DCPs would be held responsible if such incidents were repeated.
More incidents come to light
Even as Friday’s meeting was convened, two more incidents of assault on policemen came to light.
Banaswadi police have arrested two persons for getting into an altercation with policemen. The incident took place on January 11 but came to light on Friday. The accused, Venkatesh and Saravana, were sitting on the pavement in an inebriated state. When questioned by the beat constable, they got into a scuffle with him. However, the policeman was not injured.
In the second incident on January 15, two foreign students were arrested for slapping a police officer at K.G. Halli. A car driven by the students hit a bike. When questioned by a policeman, they allegedly slapped him.
