EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A plan to build a mini-grocery with gas pumps and a built-in restaurant across Fielding Road from Harrison High School will be discussed at a public meeting Monday.

The store would be a Crossroads IGA. The same store model opened in early 2017 at North Green River and Heckel roads, near Deaconess Sports Park and Goebel Soccer Complex.

The City-County Site Review Committee will examine the site plan during its meeting at 10 a.m. Monday.

The plan has carried some controversy in the past. It was the subject of a contentious hearing before the Evansville City Council in January 2015, when a rezoning was approved, 6-3.

Some nearby residents voiced concern about traffic flow and lower property values.

Officials with developer Houchens Industries said a berm and stone fence would shield the property from neighbors.

It also was said at the 2015 rezoning hearing that the Indiana Department of Transportation would need to review a traffic plan before the store construction could move forward.

The Crossroads IGA at North Green River and Heckel roads has a Schlotzky’s Deli inside. The new store near Harrison will also include a restaurant.

* The same Site Review Committee agenda for Monday also includes an examination of plans for At Home, a retailer interested in the property at 49 N. Green River Road now occupied by Burlington Coat Factory.

Burlington has signaled its intent to move to a vacant storefront in Lloyd Crossing Shopping Center at North Burkhardt Road and East Lloyd Expressway, where H.H. Gregg once was.

At Home is based in Plano, Texas, and has a variety of home decor items.
