UWS rally falls short at UMD

Myer, a 2016 graduate of Superior High School, also had a team-high seven rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot as UMD defeated UWS for the seventh straight time and improved to 94-44 all-time against the Yellowjackets.

Myer’s effort included a career-high 12 made field goals. In his past 10 games, Myer has scored 20 or more points nine times. He scored 20 or more just once in the first seven games.

Logan Rohrscheib added 14 points and Mamadou Ngom added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Bulldogs, who shot 45.2 percent and only committed five turnovers.

Shaq Coleman had 28 points to lead the Yellowjackets. Vid Milenkovic added 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds and Colton Williams had 11 points.

Down 65-45 with 8:48 remaining, UWS went on a 21-4 run to pull to within three points, but with under a minute remaining, Myer cleaned up a missed free throw by laying it in and giving UMD a five-point lead.

The Bulldogs (8-9; 4-7 NSIC) held on from there as Sean Burns laid one in after a steal with 17 seconds remaining to effectively put the game out of reach.

UMD, winners of the last three at Romano Gymnasium, will remain at home to take on Minnesota State University-Moorhead and Northern State University this weekend. Action begins Friday versus the Dragons at 8 p.m.

UWS (4-12; 2-5 UMAC) plays at Minnesota Morris at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Myer honored again

Myer is starting to make a name of himself in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as he was named the conference’s North Division Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks on Jan. 8. He is only one of three players in the NSIC to have multiple weekly citations.

Myer took home his first honor on Dec. 20, 2017. Pierre Newton, who accomplished that feat back in 2015-16, was the last Bulldog to earn at least two players of the week awards for UMD.

Myer has led UMD in scoring nine of the last 10 games and has achieved double figures in 13 of the games this season. He has also posted UMD’s only three double-doubles this season.

Myer set a personal collegiate best with 32 points against Northern Michigan on Dec. 19.

He is the lone Bulldog since the turn of the century to hit at least 20-plus points in seven consecutive games. During that stretch, Myer has dialed in 25.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and an assist as he’s shot a blazing 55.0 percent from the field and 46.4 from three.

Myer currently leads UMD in scoring (341 points, 20.1 ppg), blocked shots (18), rebounds (126, 7.4 rpg) and field-goal percentage (.508). The second leading rebounder is Sean Burns with 71.

The sophomore is also 22-of-60 on 3-point attempts and 67-of-82 from the free-throw line.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: The Yellowjackets last victory over UMD came on Nov. 24, 2010 when it upset the Bulldogs 92-80 in Duluth. … The Yellowjackets turned the ball over 11 times, seven in the first half alone, and got outscored 36-26 in the paint. UMD scored 15 points off turnovers and eight off the fast break. … UMD’s bench outscored the UWS bench 13-3. … The score was tied once (14-14) and there were four lead changes. Superior’s largest lead was 14-11 with 14:01 remaining in the first half.
