Ex-Phillies, Indians manager Charlie Manuel to get Ted Williams Museum award

Former Phillies and Indians manager Charlie Manuel will receive the Ted Williams Lifetime Achievement Award on Feb. 10 in Clearwater.

The honor is bestowed by the Ted Williams Museum at its annual Hitters Hall of Fame induction, moving this year from the Trop, where the museum located, to Spectrum Field, billed as A Night at the Ballpark, hosted by Rays centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier.

Tony Perez and Dick Allen are being inducted into the Hall, while Ron Guidry and J.R. Richard are being added to the Pitching Wall of Great Achievement, which is being renamed in honor of Roy Halladay, who died last year.

After playing parts of six seasons in the majors and six in Japan, Manuel  worked as a minor-league manager and big-league coach.

He was hired to manage the Indians in 2000 and did so for three seasons in his folksy but successful way, winning the AL Central in 2001.

He was hired by the Phillies in 2005, finishing second in the NL East his first two seasons and then first for five straight years, winning the 2008 World Series over the Rays and going back the next year but losing to the Yankees.

Manuel, 74, is currently as adviser to the Phillies. Overall, he compiled a 1000-826 record.
