MANILA, Philippines — GlobalPort secured its second straight victory in the Philippine Cup after making mincemeat of Blackwater, 101-76, in the first game of Friday night’s PBA action at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
On the driver's seat for four quarters, the Batang Pier drew balanced scoring from both the interior and from distance.
Sean Anthony, who just had three points in his last outing, sizzled from deep, making six of his seven triples in the first half. He ended up with 22 points when the final buzzer sounded.
"We hit our target, keeping them 80 points or below,” head coach Pido Jarencio said. "Everybody contributed especially Sean. From the start kaya medyo nag-breakaway kami. Stanley (Pringle) and Kelly (Nabong) were contributing. Even the rookies, tumulong."
Kelly Nabong and Stanley Pringle combined for 32 markers to help build a 31-point spread.
The win is GlobalPort’s second most lopsided in franchise history—also under Jarencio in 2015. They did it sans star guard Terrence Romeo who, on top of a knee contusion is nursing a fever.
"Ito naman ‘yung team concept namin —extra passes, effort… andoon lahat,” Jarencio offered. "Actually, simple lang naman instructions ko sa team eh. Ang Blackwater naglaro ng back-to-back-to-back games. Siyempre mapapagod din 'yan. So from the start, takbuhan."
Batang Pier’s beating of the Elite sends the latter to their second straight loss.
GlobalPort improved to 2-2 while Blackwater drops to 2-3.
“It’s a morale-booster nung nanalo kami against ROS, so I hope this continues,” Jarencio closed.
