Though pipelines have been laid, much of Fourth Avenue Main Road in Anna Nagar continues to be dusty

Months after drainage pipelines were laid, a stretch of Fourth Avenue Main Road in Shanthi Colony, Anna Nagar, remains sandy. This stretch, which has not received the benefit of a road-laying exercise, has been turned into a parking lot. Cars and cabs can be found parked on it.

Residents say Chennai Metrowater completed pipe-laying work a few months ago, but Greater Chennai Corporation is yet to initiate steps to re-lay the road. Skidding accidents involving motorcyclists are reported from this stretch.

Interestingly, a police booth is located at the intersection of 13th Main Road and Fourth Avenue Main Road off Jawaharlal Nehru Main Road in Anna Nagar. The dusty road, which starts from the police booth, provides connectivity for residents of ‘Y’ and ‘Z’ blocks. Above all, residents of Anna Nagar use the stretch to reach Koyambedu bypassing the congested Second Avenue Main Road, which connects Tirumangalam and Anna Nagar Roundtana.

“Due to the dust from the sandy stretch, we keep our doors and windows shut most of the time. Children are not allowed to play outside their houses as they get hurt on the uneven sandy stretch,” says V. Abirami, a resident of Anna Nagar.

“Of the total un-laid stretch, a portion was laid recently. The remaining portion will also be laid soon,” says a Corporation official.
