You Said It: Politicians too gullible

PREMIER AND PRIME MINISTER

The details of this hijab-cutting tale, should have seemed somewhat suspicious to most wise and savvy adults, and yet, for the umpteenth time, we have a prime minister and premier who showed impulsive and foolish judgement, by seizing upon this tale, and using it to promote their political agenda.

The wise thing would have been to leave the grandstand under wraps for a few more days, to see if the facts support the claim.

That way, the prime minister and the premier and others, could have easily avoided looking gullible.

GIVE IT TIME

Leaders from all three levels of government greatly embarrassed themselves this past weekend with their ill thought out comments regarding the alleged hijab scissor cutting incident.

Justin Trudeau, Kathleen Wynne and Big Smoke Mayor John Tory were all quick to go after a phantom suspect and lecture ordinary folks about hate speech and intolerance instead of waiting for the facts to play out and let the authorities do their proper investigation.

Questions must be answered and an investigation must be carried out. This alarming hijab hoax story cannot just be swept under the carpet even though a great many individuals and groups would prefer that it would.

PRINCIPLED

Congratulations to Father Tim Moyle and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops for refusing to disavow deeply held principles of the Catholic faith in order to access the Canada Summer Jobs program.

In spite of the possibility of many summer jobs being lost because faith communities will not bow to the anti-faith based requirements of the government, it would appear that the government is not backing down. This should come as no surprise to those who have good memories.

It was the leader of this government who, during the last election, said that anyone with pro-life principles need not apply to be a candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada.

APOLOGY TIME

Well, I believe it is only fair to say the hijab-hoax girl owes Canadians an apology. It is bad enough that the issue of the hijab (especially the burqa) has caused so much divisiveness in recent years without having an hoax stir much of the same bad feelings.

SPEAKING PROPERLY

Food for thought: I once took a course in public speaking and every time I said “you know” in my practice talk, the teacher would ring a darn bell reminding not to use those words. The same would apply when I said “ah.”

Next time you hear some speech or talk on TV or radio, take time to listen. Most apply to sports figures. “You know, ah, what I mean, eh,” but then again, “eh” is a universal Canadian word, “you know?”
