On Jan. 18, 2018: Record cold in Tampa Bay. On Jan. 19, 1977: Snow.

One day. Just one day on a calendar separates an epic cold snap from what was arguably the most historic January weather event in Tampa Bay history.

On Thursday, the region dealt with a brutal arctic blast produced record low temperatures that caused pipes to burst in Tampa, damaged crops and resulted in an avalanche of social media posts touting the cold.

Not to mention the formation of black ice that caused a major traffic nightmare.

But at least it didn’t snow.

That was Jan. 18, 2018. But those who were around on Jan. 19, 1977, will remember the day snow fell on Tampa Bay, producing a dusting of the white stuff on windshields and prompting folks to build miniature snowmen.

Snow is such a rarity in Florida that even just the sight of a flurry can send residents into a tizzy.

That was the case on Jan. 3, when the sight of snow in north Florida caused folks to break out their cell phones and post photos of miniature snowmen and the white stuff floating in the sky on social media.

But after some folks saw snow, then experienced record cold just two weeks later, maybe winter won’t be such a big deal from Florida from here on out.
