Lake Wales Police Department officers responded at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday to a vehicle crash at U.S. 60 and Ninth Street.
According to reports Aaron Vann, 27, of Lake Wales, was driving a 1998 Ford pickup eastbound on U.S. 60 approaching the intersection of Ninth Street. Edward Ethington, 81, of Winter Haven, who was traveling in a 2015 Chrysler 200 northbound on Ninth Street, approached the intersection of U.S. 60 and stopped at the stop sign. Ethington then pulled into the path of Vann, whose Ford struck Ethington’s vehicle — causing Ethington’s vehicle to spin around coming to a rest in the center median facing eastbound traffic, according to a news release. Vann’s vehicle flipped, landing on the roof in the eastbound travel lanes.
Ethington was transported to Lake Wales Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Vann was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center and is currently listed in stable condition.
The report said a witness behind Vann was able to provide information, although the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should contact Officer Jerome at the Lake Wales Police Department at 863-678-4223, ext. 521.
