While Wichita North’s freshman wonder Jackie Johnson III lit the scoreboard up, it was Shawnee Mission East that closed out the third game of the McPherson Invitational Tournament as the victor, holding off Wichita North 83-77 on Thursday evening.
Setting a freshman single-game scoring record with 36 points, Johnson III dropped in 16 of those in the fourth quarter as he tired to led the Redskins to a win, only to fall short to the Lancers balanced attack. Peyton Hatter also reached double figures for Wichita North with 20.
The Lancers had four players hit double digits with Zane Meeks leading the way at 27, while Kelyn Bolton dropped in 19, Noah Kurlbaum had 18 and Jack Schoemann added 11.
Work under the boards also helped the Lancers as they held a 39-17 advantage in rebounds, while Wichita North took a total of 24 three-point shots.
Shawnee Mission East will now play in the 8:15 p.m. game on Friday against McPherson, while Wichita North will play Blue Valley West at 4:40 p.m.
