Two police stations and one reporting police post have been set up in the revenue area of Pauri district, announced the Additional Director General of police (law and order) Ashok Kumar on Thursday. He, however, hastened to add that the move has nothing to do with the High Court’s recent direction to the State Government for setting up regular police stations in revenue areas of the State within six months.
“The decision on setting up two police stations and one reporting police post in Pauri district has been taken a few months ago,” he said.
While regular police stations have been set up in Thalisain and Paithani the reporting police post has come up at Pabau. Two sub-inspectors, one head constable, 11 constables and one constable driver have been deputed at each of the two police stations which have been set into operation on Thursday. Similarly, one sub-inspector, one head constable and eight constables have been deputed at the reporting post at Pabau. While 115 revenue grams have been included within Thalisain police station’s jurisdictional area 115 revenue grams in Paithani police station aside from 99 revenue villages have been included in the jurisdictional limit of the reporting post at Pabau.
Quizzed over what they are going to do to execute the recent High Court’s order of replacing revenue police with regular police across the State, Kumar said that the State administration is yet to give them any instruction regarding the matter. “However, the police district chiefs have been directed to send reports on the number of police stations needed in the revenue area under their jurisdictional limits. We would work on them after the reports are received. We are also awaiting the go-ahead nod from the state administration on the matter,” he said.
It is pertinent to mention that the Uttarakhand High Court had ordered the abolition of the revenue police system, started way back in 1861 by then British India government, while asking the state government to replace revenue police with regular police in six months.
