VAR: Chelsea and Norwich FA Cup chaos not stunting video technology progress

THE FA are to press ahead with the use of VAR in the next round of the FA Cup despite teething problems in Wednesday night’s third-round replay between Chelsea and Norwich.

Antonio Conte was furious with VAR

Antonio Conte was furious after Chelsea were three times denied penalty shouts, with referee Graham Scott instead booking the players for diving.

TV replays clearly showed contact in one incident in particular between Willian and Timm Klose in the second minute of extra-time but Scott refused to listen to Chelsea appeals to consult the technology at his disposal.

Today it emerged that video assistant Mike Jones specifically told him his original decision was correct and there was no need for replays – unbeknown to confused fans both at Stamford Bridge and watching at home on the BBC.

The situation was described by Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer as a “shambles”.

Nevertheless, the FA are to continue with the video referee experiment, with IFAB, the body responsible globally for the laws of the game set to vote in March whether to adopt the system at the end of a two-year test period.

All the officials are having to learn about how to use VAR under pretty intense scrutiny

FA spokesperson

“All the officials are having to learn about how to use VAR under pretty intense scrutiny,” said an FA spokesman.

“There was quite a bit of flak last week because things took ‘too long’ and maybe they are trying to do things too quickly as a result. But we knew there would be teething problems. This is a system that is still in its infancy and it was inevitable.

“On Tuesday, when Mike correctly told Jon Moss that Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal for Leicester was onside, VAR was getting praised. Now it is getting criticised.

“The more the officials use the system, the easier it will be for them to get things right more often.”
