Wichita State basketball player talks 'short shorts'

The phenomenon began for Samajae Haynes-Jones when he found an old picture of his mother, Sharon Haynes, wearing short basketball shorts.

Haynes-Jones, now a junior at Wichita State, liked the look and began rolling his shorts up his senior year of high school at Wichita East. He's not alone: there are a growing number of basketball players who are making short shorts the latest fashion trend on the court.

"One game, I think it was against Southeast, I decided to roll my shorts up super high," Haynes-Jones said. "Everyone was like, 'Why is he doing that? He looks so goofy.' I just kept doing it ever since."

The Wichita Eagle reports that short shorts haven't completely overtaken the team at Wichita State. Senior forward Rashard Kelly is the only other player on the team (Landry Shamet will sometimes roll them once) that rolls his shorts, but he wears extra-large trunks so his efforts are not as noticeable.

Not only does Haynes-Jones roll his shorts, but he also picked out the smallest pair of shorts he could order — medium.

"I'm just being myself," Haynes-Jones said. "I just roll my shorts up and get ready to ball."

Kelly said his reason for rolling his shorts has nothing to do with how he wants to look, rather for comfort when he's playing.

"I don't like to feel them during the game," Kelly said. "A lot of guards roll up their shorts because when they do crossovers and go between their legs they don't want their shorts to get stuck on the ball."

What do Haynes-Jones' teammates think of his short shorts?

"They're almost like compression shorts," Kelly said. "They're skin-tight. He's a little guy, though. Little fellas can get away with more stuff like that than us big guys."

"That's what he do, that's his thing," senior Zach Brown said. "If somebody wants to roll their shorts up all the way up to their . whatever, I ain't going to say nothing about it as long as he comes out here and plays."
