One of the co-founders of the opposition research firm Fusion GPS told House investigators in November that the Russian government appeared to carry out an “old fashioned purge” after the release of the so-called Steele dossier.

Glenn Simpson told the House Intelligence Committee that shortly following the publication of his firm’s dossier “there was a series of episodes where people were arrested or died mysteriously.”

Simpson revealed the information during questioning by Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., about the dossier’s sources, which was compiled by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele. The dossier contains salacious, mostly unverified allegations about President Trump’s ties to Russia.

“And it appears that one of the sources was mysteriously killed?” Speier asked.

“That's not my information,” Simpson replied. “I mean, there was a series of episodes where people were arrested or died mysteriously that came shortly after the disclosure of the existence of this information. And I do believe there was a bit of an old fashioned purge.”

But, Simpson cautioned that anyone who was arrested or died — at least to his knowledge — “wasn’t anyone that helped us.”

“I think it was more likely people who were taking the opportunity to settle scores or were falsely accused, as often, you know, just like in the old days, and/or were sources of the U.S. Intelligence Community, not us,” Simpson explained.

In a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee in August, an attorney representing Fusion GPS said “somebody’s already been killed” as a result of the dossier.

“He wants to be very careful to protect his sources,” Josh Levy, an attorney for Simpson said in the closed 10-hour hearing. “Somebody's already been killed as a result of the publication of this dossier, and no harm should come to anybody related to this honest work.”

Neither Levy nor Simpson elaborated on who was killed.

However, it has been reported that Oleg Erovinkin, a former general in the KGB and its successor FSB, helped Steele compile the dossier. He was found dead in his car in Moscow in December 2016, and no cause of death has yet been confirmed.

Erovinkin was an aide to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, who was repeatedly named in the dossier. In the dossier, Steele said he has a source close to Sechin.

Simpson’s testimony before Senate Judiciary was released unilaterally by ranking member Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., earlier this month.

The release of the House Intelligence transcript came after members voted unanimously Thursday to release it.
