AN 8-MONTH-OLD baby has reportedly been killed after a car ploughed into a packed crowd at Brazil's famous Copacabana Beach.

Witnesses claim the driver hit several people at the boardwalk at the famous hotspot at about 8pm on Thursday.

They added the vehicle travelled about 15 metres before it ground to a halt.

Rio police said at least 10 people had been rushed to hospital with injuries.

Among the known victims are two children and seven adults.

Officers were quick to arrest the driver who has been taken to a local police station.

Accountant Magno Morais, 35, who witnessed the horror crash said the car lost control before it stopped in the sand.

He said: "It was shocking, we do not have a reaction at a time like this.

“People wanted to lynch the driver, but police at the scene prevented it. There were a lot of people run down.”

Sales promoter Cristiane Lima, 45, said there were many children near where the car ploughed into the crowd.

“I was 10 metres from the scene of the accident. The impact was very great.

“The car came out of nowhere and hit many children who were on the waterfront. There were many children screaming and crying.”
