The Chilean is widely expected to leave Arsenal during the January transfer window and looked initially destined for Man City.
But negotiations between the two clubs broke down in the latter stages of a deal, allowing Man Utd to swoop in and make a dramatic move for the former Barcelona man.
Sanchez now looks set to join the likes of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Phil Jones at Old Trafford, with Armenian winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan – who is being used as a makeweight in the deal – heading in the opposite direction.

The 29-year-old was spotted out on the streets of north London earlier today after nipping out for a haircut.
And his presence did not go unnoticed by a group of schoolchildren, who mobbed the forward for pictures as he emerged from the upmarket hair salon.
The kids could be heard shouting at him to join United – but he gave nothing away, greeting their shouts with an emotionless straight face.
It comes as Chilean journalist Fabian Morales claimed Sanchez’s family had arrived in the UK to celebrate his move to the Red Devils.

United chiefs are reported to have chartered a private jet in order to bring the player up to the north-west from London.
Earlier today, Arsene Wenger spoke candidly about the move.
"I've worked on transfers for 30 years, so it is likely to happen,” he told reporters.
