Worthing Residents Express Wish For Greater Police Presence
Dan Santella reports:
The small town of Worthing, South Dakota wanted to hear from its citizens about two issues impacting the community, and people were not afraid to share their thoughts.
The town has four police officers; all are part-time. At the community input meeting Thursday night, two main points were discussed- the future of Worthing's Civic Center, and the police presence in town.
"I'd like to see more [police] presence here...because there's too many little kids running around town here, and too many cars going through town at high speed," Lyle Devitt of Worthing said. "They don't care, they don't slow down. Some little kid's going to get killed one of these days."
"I would rather see our own police force, if we can afford it," Duane Peterson of Worthing said. "I think it'd be a better deal than the sheriffs, come through when they want to."
The consensus on the two discussion points was fairly clear- attendees at the meeting wanted more of a police presence in town, and they wanted to fix the roof on the Civic Center.
