Swedish skier dies in Gulmarg

| | Srinagar

Amid inclement weather and advisories issued by the Government on movement in upper reaches, a Swedish skier was killed after an avalanche struck tourist resort of Gulmarg area in north Kashmir on Thursday. Another skier was rescued by the police, officials said.

—“The two tourists came under the avalanche, one of them has died on the spot and another has been rescued by the authorities,” an official said.

Hundreds of foreign and domestic tourists arrive in Gulmarg, one of the leading ski resorts in the world, to enjoy snowfall. The alpine slopes in Gulmarg are sought after among the skiers across the world.

Former Chief Minister and Opposition leader Omar Abdullah, himself a ski enthusiast, questioned the authorities on the safety measures at Gulmarg resort.

“Very unfortunate. How were these skiers allowed to ski off-piste considering that avalanche warnings had been issued 24 hours ago?” Omar wrote on Twitter.
