Case registered against organisers of Kokudi jallikattu

Around 80 persons sustained injuries at jallikattu events held in Tiruchi and Ariyalur districts on Thursday.

While 33 persons sustained minor injuries at the jallikattu held at Pothamettupatti near Manapparai in Tiruchi district, 47 were injured in events held at Keezha Michealpatti and Kokudi in Ariyalur district. One of the events in Ariyalur district was held without permission.

At Pothamettupatti, the jallikattu went on for about eight hours with 581 bulls brought from several districts including Tiruchi, Dindigul, Madurai, Pudukottai and Karur. Around 370 tamers were permitted to take part in the event after being subjected to medical examination. Eight others were disqualified for failing to adhere to guidelines. Veterinary and medical teams screened the bulls and tamers prior to allowing them to take part, said police sources.

Official sources said 33 persons — 22 bull tamers, eight owners and three spectators — sustained minor injuries. The injured were treated at the spot by the medical teams.

Collector K. Rajamani and Superintendent of Police P.S.C. Kalyan supervised the event.

In Ariyalur, 39 persons sustained injuries at the Kokudi jallikattu, which was organised without permission, and eight were injured at the event held at Keezha Michealpatti.

Eight of the injured, with grievous injuries, were referred to government hospitals at Thanjavur, Lalgudi, Ariyalur and Kumbakonam. The condition of all of them was stated to be stable. Others were treated at temporary clinics set up near the jallikattu venues.

As many as 265 bulls were let loose and 150 bull tamers participated in the jallikattu held at Kokudi, while 230 bulls were released at the event held at Keezha Michealpatti.

Police sources said a case had been registered against the organisers of Kokudi jallikattu for failing to get the mandatory permission for conducting the event.
