With supply of coal improving, the second 500 mw unit of the Ballari Thermal Power Station (BTPS) at Kuditini near Ballari was made functional on Thursday.
As on Thursday, around 900 mw of power is being generated from the two units of the power station. Around 1.25 lakh tonnes of coal is in stock in the yard.
Due to severe coal shortage, only one of the two 500 mw each units was generating power since November 2017, while the second 500 mw unit along with the 700 mw unit remained shut.
Sources in the BTPS told The Hindu that the supply of coal had increased with the arrival of coal in two or three rakes (each rake transporting 3,500 tons) daily.
The sources also said that the 500 mw unit, which was in operation till now, would be shut for maintenance and the 700 mw unit would be synchronised enabling an additional power generation by 200 mw.
Meanwhile, steps have been taken to get the impounding reservoir within the precincts of the BTPS filled. B. Kumar Naik, Managing Director, Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, who visited the plant on Wednesday, performed puja at the reservoir. S. Mrutyunjaya, Executive Director, BTPS, and other senior officials were present.
