Husband claims he found her hanging; ‘suicide note’ states she was childless

A 28-year-old woman was found dead at her residence in south-east Delhi’s Govindpuri on Thursday morning. The family of the woman alleged foul play and accused the husband of murdering her and later hanging her body, said the police.

The deceased’s family also claimed that she was tortured by her in-laws for dowry. An inquiry was conducted by an executive magistrate after which the police registered a case.

Body found on bed

According to the police, a call was received around 7 a.m. on Thursday at the Govindpuri police station regarding a suicide by a woman in Tughlaqabad village. On reaching the spot, the body of the deceased, Rajni, was found on a bed. Her husband Sandeep informed the police that he had found his wife hanging from the ceiling fan with her dupatta. He brought her down, removed the dupatta and then informed the police about the suicide.

Torture claim

A suicide note was also recovered from the house wherein the woman had stated that she was taking the extreme step as she was childless, said the police.

“On the statement of Balu Ram, the father of the deceased, a case under Section 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 304-B (dowry death) was registered at the Govindpuri police station. Rajni was married to Sandeep in 2012 and was tortured by her in-laws as per her father’s statement,” said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP (south-East).

Rajni’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Neighbours told the police that they did not feel the woman was being harassed or tortured. The police said they are investigating the case. The suicide note has been sent for forensic examination, the police added.
