DUBAI: An airline cleaner, who embezzled an American belle’s memory card and posted her photos on Facebook to attract followers, was locked up on Thursday.
The Asian cleaner, 28, was on duty inside an airplane when he landed on the victim’s smartphone in a seat‘s pocket on Sept.15.2017. He removed the card and handed the phone to his supervisor.
He committed an assault on the victim’s privacy by publicising her photos on Facebook besides misusing telecommunication services to hurt her feelings. He confessed during Criminal Court questioning.
The court’s jury sent him to spend six months in prison to be followed by deportation and ordered that the victim’s photos be deleted from the Facebook account and storage devices.
In prosecution records, he feared that stealing the smartphone would get him easily caught. When his workmates were busy cleaning the plane’s interior he opened the phone and removed the card.
He went home, inserted the card in his phone and examined the photos. “She was a beautiful woman. I decided to upload her photos on my Facebook page but my phone failed due to a fault.
“I decided to purchase a new phone for the purpose. I purchased it from a mall in Sharjah. Before paying for it, I first inserted the card in it and confirmed it would work for me,” he explained.
“I posted them on my public Facebook page for my 307 friend to admire, and also to attract more followers.” Authorities delivered the smartphone to the victim in Lebanon. She complained the card was missing.
According to airport security records, the victim said she arrived from Angola on a national airline and forgot her smartphone inside the plane at the Dubai airport. She continued to Lebanon.
“There, I received an email that the phone was discovered…Upon receiving it I realised the memory card was missing…I learnt that my photos were on the airport employee’s Facebook page.”
Three weeks after the victim received the phone, her friend who was also one of the cleaner’s Facebook followers alerted her after seeing her photos and that of her family members on the page.
