Community snapshot: Mayfield High School Sophomore Mireya Sanchez-Maes has been selected by National Center for Women & Information Technology as one of 41 national recipients of the 2018 NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. As part of the recognition, Sanchez-Maes will receive a cash prize and an all-expenses-paid trip for herself and one parent to attend the National Award Ceremony, March 9 to 11 at The Ritz-Carlton Charlotte in North Carolina. Arrowhead Park Early College High School Senior Catalina Sanchez-Maes, Mireya’s sister, and Centennial High School Senior Jillian Hughes were also recognized by the awards program in the honorable mention category. Earlier this month, Mireya also earned second place in the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6917’s Voice of Democracy audio essay contest. Mireya is the daughter of Margaret Sanchez-Maes and Jim Maes, a health and physical education specialist with the district. To submit an item for community snapshot, email photo and information to news@lcsun-news.com.
