Cañon City residents using a dumpster for residential trash will need to start using smaller recepticles before a new ordinance takes effect on Feb. 2

The Cañon City Council passed an ordinance Dec. 4 stating that residents using a dumpster for their residential trash will need to change to a 96-gallon tote or smaller.

According to information provide by the city, this applies to all residential property with three or fewer units on a parcel, unless it is a mobile home park or residential use where livestock is allowed and lawfully kept.

Construction dumpsters are allowed with a permit.

During the month of February, Code Enforcement will give warnings to residents using a large dumpster for their residential trash. Enforcement will begin in March.

8.16.040 Use of Trash Receptacle:

B. Except as otherwise provided in this Chapter, no approved trash receptacle used in a residential zone district of the City for regular trash service shall have a capacity exceeding 96 gallons.

C. No trash receptacle shall be located at a place of collection in the front yard area of any property within a residential zone district for any period longer than 24 hours before or after collection.

D. No trash receptacle shall be placed on a sidewalk or in any other location that interferes with the regular flow of vehicles or pedestrian movement on the traveled portions of any street, alley or other public right-of-way.
