TROPICAL CYCLONE BERGUITTA is still on course to make a direct hit on Mauritius, expected to unleash furious winds, according to the latest track path model update from weather company Foreca.

The Mauritius Meteorological Services issues its latest Tropical Cyclone Berguitta bulletin – advising residents the centre of the monster storm “continues to approach Mauritius dangerously and may pass very close to the island”.

As of 4pm local time, Tropical Cyclone Berguitta is centred at about 240km to the north east of Mauritius and is moving in a general west-south-westerly direction at a speed of about 7 km/h.

The warning said: “The public in Mauritius is advised to complete all precautions and to stay safe.

“Weather in Mauritius will remain cloudy to overcast with intermittent rain. The rain will be moderate to heavy at times with thunderstorms.

“Wind will blow from south-east at about 50 km/h, strengthening gradually. The guys may reach 120 km/h in the evening.

“Sea will be high with heavy swells. It is strictly advised not to go out at sea.”

The Met Office is predicting the islands of Mauritius and La Reunion with winds between 70mph and 80mph when Tropical Cyclone Berguitta hits.

Tropical Cyclone Berguitta is expected to dump as much as 300mm to 400mm of rainfall and cause a rise in sea levels, prompting storm surge warnings.

The Met Office said: “Intense Tropical Cyclone Berguitta will move southwest to affect the islands of Mauritius and La Reunion over the next 24 hours or so, bringing damaging winds and flooding rain.”
