FOXBORO – Patriots thought they could exhale. They were wrong.
Although Tom Brady was present for the Patriots warmup, the quarterback did not participate in Thursday’s practice due to a right hand injury. Brady was seen during the media’s practice availability, but hours later was listed as ‘did not participate’ on the team’s injury report.
Whether that’s a bad sign, remains to be seen as the Patriots prepare to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in Sunday’s AFC Championship game. Brady suffered a right hand injury during Wednesday’s practice when a teammate reportedly collided with the quarterback, who was handing the ball off.
Following the injury, Brady canceled his Wednesday press conference because he was meeting with the Patriots medical staff. A source told the Providence Journal that Brady’s hand “should be fine.” The fact that he was out there during Thursday’s warmup could be an encouraging sign. Brady has missed several practice this season due to an Achilles and left shoulder injury. The quarterback called those ‘maintenance days.’
Of course, we won’t know if the injury impact’s Brady’s performance until the game comes on Sunday.
It was notable, however, that Brady had a glove on his right hand. Typically, Brady practices with just one glove on – one his non-throwing left hand. Even in the winter, the quarterback prefers to throw the ball with no glove since he like the grip of the ball better on his skin.
