4 of a family found dead

Four members of a family were found dead in a house of Cox's Bazar town's Jadiram Pahar area yesterday evening.

The victims are Sumon Chowdhury, 35, a cosmetics trader, his wife Baby Chowdhury, 28, and his two daughters Obontika Chowdhury, 8, and Joty Chowdhury, 3, said police.

On information, police broke into the room around 7:00pm and found the body of Sumon hanging from a ceiling fan and bodies of three others lying on a bed, said Ranjit Kumar Barua, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station.

"Sumon might have committed suicide after killing his wife and two daughters,” said the police official, adding that they were looking into the matter.

The bodies were sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies, said the OC.

Sumon's sister-in-law Shakti Chowdhury said Sumon and his four other brothers had been living separately inside a single compound.

The couple talked normally to other family members as of noon yesterday. Baby fed Joty when the child was in her father's lap around 2:30pm, said Shakti.

After lunch, they went to their rooms for taking rest.

Sumon's friend Dilip, a painter, went to the house around 4:30pm and told Shakti that Sumon was not receiving phone calls despite several attempts.

Shakti said they later called Sumon several times from outside of the door, but no one responded. They then informed local ward councillor Raj Bihari Das of the matter and he called in police.

Shakti added that the couple had no familial dispute, but Sumon was going through financial problems recently.
