The Barnstable School Committee and Town Council have scheduled a joint session for Thursday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. to fill a vacant seat on the school committee. They'll have three names from which to choose.
The school committee seat became available last month when Margeaux Weber resigned unexpectedly.
On Tuesday, a joint subcommittee chaired by Town Councilor John Flores (Precinct 1 Cummaquid) interviewed 11 applicants late into the night. After those interviews were conducted, the subcommittee narrowed the field of candidates to three: Susanne Conley, Barbara Dunn, and Edith LaBran.
“We agreed unanimously on three outstanding finalists," Flores said Thursday. The councilor added that the subcommittee believes any of the three "would do a terrific job."
Flores said the subcommittee has mailed letters to the eight other candidates thanking them for their applications and their willingness to serve. Those applicants are Peter Bertling, Marc Brunco, Michael Edwards, Paula Hersey, Timothy Lizotte, Heather Malkani, Nora Monteiro, and James Ruane.
The three finalists have a final round of public interviews during the Feb. 1 joint meeting. After that, a vote will be taken to determine who is named to the four-year school committee term.
Conley is a former vice president of enrollment and student development at Framingham State University who retired in 2015. She also served as dean of students and director of the university writing center.
Dunn is a former teacher who taught for many years at the Osterville Bay School.
LaBran was once principal of Barnstable Middle School in Marstons Mills; executive director of Sturgis Charter Public School in Hyannis; and a Lowell Public Schools administrator.
In addition to Flores, subcommittee members include Town Council President Eric Steinhilber, Councilor Jennifer Cullum, and School Committee Chairman Chris Joyce.
Weber, who had just won her third term in office, resigned Dec. 6.
