Since You Asked: Arrestees sometimes have no fixed address

Why is it that so many people in the felony arrest listing don't know their address?

— Don, via email

It's not that they don't know their address, Don. In many cases, they just don't have one.

But really quickly, let's get everyone else tuned into what we're talking about. The Mail Tribune publishes felony arrest logs online and in print most every day. We base our information off the latest Jackson County Jail booking logs, which we pick up from the jail nightly.

Each of our entries contains the name and age of the person arrested. And, in some cases, an address. Sometimes, the jail log entries will have this listing: "100 Medford Transient." Obviously not a street name.

"A lot of these people do not have a permanent address," said Jackson County Sheriff's Capt. Dan Penland, who runs the jail. "They kind of couch surf. A lot of them are truly transient."

In a couple cases, the jail log entry for the person arrested will have incomplete information, with just a blank space beneath their name. That means the booking process has not yet been completed, Penland said.
