NEW DELHI. The resignation of Punjab cabinet minister Rana Gurjeet Singh, who has been drawing ire of opposition for his alleged involvement in sand mining auctions, was today accepted by CM Amarinder Singh after meeting with Congress President Rahul Gandhi, reported ANI.
Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh confirmed the development while briefing media.

Gurjeet, who recently received clean chit from the Justice Narang Commission that investigated the mining scam, had submitted his resignation as power and irrigation minister to CM Amarinder on Tuesday.

In his own words, Gurjeet claimed that he was resigning only to "put an end to the smear campaign opposition in Punjab was running against him".

Former minister and SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia demanded that Narang Commission be disbanded for "wrongfully giving clean chits to Gurjeet".

Leader of opposition in Punjab assembly and AAP leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Saturday targeted Amarinder for defending a "habitual offender and tainted minister" like Rana Gurjeet.

Khaira had on Tuesday challenged Rahul on Twitter to show "zero tolerance towards corruption" by sacking Gurjeet.

The enforcement directorate had issued summons for January 17 to Rana Inder Partap Singh, son of Gurjeet, in connection with raising funds to the tune of $18 million (around Rs 100 crore) by floating foreign shares for family-owned Rana Sugars without requisite permission from RBI.

After coming out of the ED office on Wednesday, Rana Inder denied that there was any wrong doing by him or his father.
