A Fort Smith church is lending a helping hand to a local nonprofit organization.

Keley Simpson, missions facilitator for First Presbyterian Church, and church member Rubye Barton, presented Clyde Chaney, director and truck driver for Golden Rule Clothes Closet and More, with a $5,000 check to benefit the organization Wednesday afternoon. According to the Golden Rule Facebook page, the organization provides victims of fires and natural disasters, as well as low-income families, with clothing, furniture and household items free of charge.

"Our trust fund committee chose the Golden Rule Clothes Closet as one of the charitable organizations they wished to donate to, and of course, we were all aware of the danger that they faced a few months ago," Simpson said.

A post dated Oct. 12 on the Golden Rule Facebook page states Golden Rule would close at the end of November because donations were no longer able to cover rising operating costs. However, the organization received enough donations in November to remain open for another two months.

"We wanted to help make sure that they had that support because they serve so many people in the community, especially this time of year," Simpson said.

Chaney said Wednesday at the rate donations are coming in, Golden Rule has enough funds to run another year.
