Alicia Vikander in a scene from the trailer for “Tomb Raider.”

In September, the first trailer for “Tomb Raider” focused on scenes of Alicia Vikander in action as the Indiana Jones-esque adventurer Lara Croft. A newly released follow-up fleshes out the character’s back story, as the boxer and bicyclist goes against the wishes of Kristin Scott Thomas to search for her long-lost father (Dominic West).

That quest takes her to an island in the middle of the Devil’s Sea, where she clashes with the film’s primary villain, played by Walton Goggins. He’s a member of a group known as Trinity that is seeking to set off a worldwide genocide.

The character of Lara Croft originated in a video game and was later played in two films by Angelina Jolie. Ms. Vikander’s movie is meant to be a prequel to Ms. Jolie’s. Hence the trailer’s tagline, “Her Legend Begins.”

The trailer’s soundtrack features a cover of the Destiny’s Child hit “Survivor” from 2001, the same year the first Lara Croft movie was released. Whether the franchise survives beyond this attempted reboot will be determined when “Tomb Raider” hits theaters on March 16.
