Other than friends and some family here, it’s very hard to find reasons to stay in CT for retirement, without factoring in its natural beauty and ignoring the weather. The taxes are horrendous; all of them including real eastate, personal property, sales, income, inheritance, a myriad of hidden taxes and fees (a tax by another name)! There’s over regulation at every level – state and local. Your home is no longer your castle. You cannot do hardly anything that is not governed by a regulation/ordinance or that doesn’t entail the approval of a bureaucrat/Commission (and a fee), or that you don’t need a lawyers help to navigate! Add to all that very high energy costs and a very high cost of living. That’s why people are leaving the state in droves for more friendly states or countries – we’ve even lost a seat or two in the House of Representatives because of this exodus.
Rich old lady wants and can afford to live in CT for her twilight years. What’s the story here???? What is the point? Some elite woman can afford to live here?? Unless you fall into her category or the welfare bum category no one else can afford to live here!
Yes,Why if your well off who cares,it’s the working stiffs who suffer here.
I love the classic vibe of many CT towns. This is truly a beautiful state. But it just doesn’t make sense to retire here financially unless you are really rich.
Unless you’re wealthy like the woman in the article, you need to live cheaply when you retire. You just can’t do that in Ct. Yes, the state is beautiful but so are lots of other states that go easier on your finances. One example: my property tax in Ct was over 5,000 dollars a year. Where I live now for a home with a higher value my taxes are 600 dollars and will drop to 400 next year when I qualify for the homestead act . Finances are the key to any retirement plan.
The fervent activism of conservationists in has made our state a natural wonder for ALL to enjoy.
such lovely poetry ms moore, it almost makes me want to stay here when I retire… NOT!
No way!!!! When I can escape I’m outa here
