German court convicts Algerian of supporting IS group

BERLIN (AP) " A German court has convicted an Algerian man of supporting the Islamic State group for helping plan the smuggling of a would-be fighter to IS-held terrority in Syria. He was sentenced to a year and nine months in prison.

The Berlin district court said it convicted the 32-year-old, identified only as Fayssal M.B. in line with German privacy rules, of supporting a terrorist organization. The defendant was already convicted last May of supporting IS in a separate case and sentenced to two years and nine months, a verdict that is under appeal.

Judges found Thursday that, in September 2015, the Berlin resident participated in a chat group that organized the smuggling of a man who was then in Turkey to IS territory. It wasn't clear whether it was successful.
