Supreme Court Bench rejects plea to restrain media from reporting judges' issue

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra on Thursday held a meeting with four seniormost Supreme Court judges to resolve issues raised by them at a press conference on January 12.

The meeting between the CJI and Justices J. Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B. Lokur and Kurian Joseph lasted for over 10 minutes before the resumption of court proceedings at 10.30 a.m., sources in the court said.

On Wednesday, the meeting could not take place as Justice Chelameswar was indisposed.

In the unprecedented presser on January 12, the four judges raised a litany of problems, including the assigning of cases. They said certain issues afflicted the top court.

Court to look into plea

Meanwhile, a Supreme Court Bench, headed by the CJI, on Thursday refused to entertain a plea seeking to restrain the media from publishing, discussing and politicising the issues raised by four judges.

The Bench said it would look into the matter only after the court Registry took the petition on record and listed it for hearing.

The plea, which mentioned urgent listing and hearing, sought to restrain “the printing, discussion, politicisation and debate on the subject matter of the press conference dated January 12 with immediate effect to control further damage to the institution”.
