University of Warwick
Department of Mathematics
Research Fellow
£29,799 – £38,833 per annum
Fixed term contract for 3 years. (2 posts available)
This is a joint post between Warwick Mathematics Institute (WMI) and The
School of Life Sciences (SLS).
The University of Warwick wishes to appoint two ambitious researchers to
exciting new post-doctoral positions in epidemiological modelling at one of the
UK’s leading universities. The opportunity has arisen due to the successful award
of funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation; our aim is to perform
research that informs strategic decision-making around plans for the elimination
of sleeping sickness (human African trypanosomiasis, HAT). An international,
multidisciplinary research consortium – “HAT Modelling and Economic Predictions
for Policy (HAT MEPP)” – will work with key partners in HAT-affected countries to
develop regional, policy-ready modelling frameworks and produce predictive
results that support decision-makers in the national control programmes. You
will work with Dr Kat Rock and Prof Matt Keeling to develop, fit and refine
dynamic HAT transmission models for a variety of endemic regions, and
communicate modelling results to policy-makers.
You will also work closely with other researchers at the University of Warwick
with considerable expertise in mathematical modelling applied to Neglected
Tropical Diseases, particularly colleagues in the Systems Biology and Infectious
Disease Epidemiology Research (SBIDER) research group. Close collaboration
and regular communication between the post holder and modellers at the
Institute for Disease Modeling (Seattle) and funded economists based in the
Warwick Medical School and Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute
(Switzerland) will be crucial to the successful delivery of the research
programme. You will have day-to-day responsibility for constructing and/or
tailoring models to incorporate local level details such as spatial structure or new
interventions, which will be used as part of analyses for decision-making. The
role will also involve some travel to visit policy-makers and national programme
leads in partner countries in West and Central Africa (accompanied by other UKbased
researchers).
If you have not yet been awarded your PhD but are near submission or have
recently submitted your PhD, any offers of employment will be made as
Research Assistant on level 5 of the University grade structure (£28,936 pa).
Upon successful award of your PhD and evidence of this fact, you will be
promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade
structure (£29,799 pa).
Applicants with expertise in all areas of infectious disease modelling are
encouraged to apply.
Informal enquires to: Kat Rock (k.s.rock@warwick.ac.uk).
