FOXBORO – Brian Hoyer’s ready if he’s called upon, but understands if you don’t want to see the quarterback play this weekend in the AFC Championship game against Jacksonville.

The Tom Brady watch is on as the quarterback missed Thursday’s practice due to a right hand injury that he suffered the day before. Although it’s believed that Brady will play on Sunday against the Jaguars, there is a level of uncertainty as the Pats have one more practice on Friday.

In the event he needs to play, Hoyer says he’ll be ready.

“I prepare every week like I’m going to play. Whether I do or I don’t, that’s not really up to me,” Hoyer said. “I think the one thing I can benefit from is since I was here as the backup last time, I’ve played a lot of football. So I’ve been a starter in three different teams. I know how to prepare as one… The truth of reality is you never know what your name is going to be called. I think if anything, having been the backup and been a starter, now being in the backup role, I know how to prepare like I’m going to play. And if I don’t play, it’s good for our team. If I do, I’m ready to go.”

If anything, Hoyer has experience against the Jaguars. He’s started four games against Jacksonville in his career in games for Cleveland, Houston and Chicago. Hoyer is 2-2 against the Jags and has thrown 1,059 yards, four touchdowns and two touchdowns.

His last start came in 2016 with the Bears. They lost 17-16. Hoyer threw 302 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

“They’re a great defense. I’ve played against these guys four times in the last three years [from 2014-2016],” Hoyer said. “Each year they seem to get a little bit better… Jalen Ramsey, I got to play against him last year. Obviously, a very talented corner. I know [A.J.] Bouye from when I was with him in Houston, [Tashaun] Gipson when I played in Cleveland. I have a familiarity with these guys.”
