STAMFORD—It was a Bear market in FCIAC Boys Swimming Wednesday as the Norwalk-Brien McMahon High Co-op boys swim team dunked the Westhill-Stamford High Co-op, 105-74 at the Westhill pool.

Norwalk-McMahon took first place in six of the opening nine events and used its depth to secure its third victory in four meets this season.

“I feel really good about where this team is right now. We did what we wanted to do. We secured the victory,” said Norwalk-McMahon boys swim coach Chris Passamano. “In a league as tough as the FCIAC, you can never be cavalier about any win. It was also an opportunity to see some kids compete in different events than usual.”

NORWALK-MCMAHON ON RIGHT TRACK

Although the Bears do have six seniors on its roster, boys swimming is a sport where youth can shine.

Among the winners for Norwalk-McMahon were sophomore Chris Dauser (200 free) and sophomore Henry Velazquez (500 free by seven seconds).

Junior Mateo Roldan (100 backstroke) and senior co-captain Joshue Balderrama (100 butterfly) also had first place finishes as Norwalk-McMahon swam the final two events as exhibitions.

“Every meet is a learning experience for our new guys. We do have a good group of returnees who have matured and understand how tough the FCIAC is,” Norwalk-McMahon coach Passamano said. “This group is really hungry to win. There’s no gray area in our mission.”

Norwalk-McMahon also captured two of the three relays.

WESTHILL-SHS OVERCAME OBSTACLES

Westhill-SHS, which has no seniors on its roster, won four events on the afternoon.

Junior co-captain Jordan Jang paced the effort by winning the 50 free (24.00) and the 100 free (52.61). He also swam a leg on Westhill-SHS’ victorious 400 free relay (3:33.99).

Sophomore Ben Feldman won the 200 IM and was part of the 400 free relay.

“The junior co-captains (Jang, Sebastian Brice) show the new guys the way,” Jang said. “If we all put in the hard work and swim with intensity every day we will see the reward at the end of the year. The goal is to do well in the postseason. We got outtouched in two events. Those are points lost in a blink of an eye. It will make us work harder.”

Westhill-SHS was without a lot of depth Wednesday as the flu bug claimed a number of swimmers.

“The kids we had swam well,” said Westhill-SHS veteran coach Rick Lewis. “Physically and in terms of understanding the sport there is a transition for some of our new guys. We’re starting to learn.”

BRADLEY IN TOP FORM AGAIN

Norwalk-McMahon junior diver Kevin Bradley won the one-meter diving competition with 302 points.

It was an impressive showcase as the FCIAC Diving Championship will be at the Westhill pool.

“After the one mandatory dive, I wanted to try some difficult dives to get used to these boards and this setting for the FCIACs,” Bradley said. “It’s still early but this is the start to the season I wanted.”

Bradley was hampered last postseason by a shoulder injury. Now he appears on track to be one of the favorites for the FCIAC and state diving in February and March.

“I’m healthy now. The shoulder did set me back a bit last season,” Bradley said. “I’m looking forward to this postseason.”
