Sets 3-month deadline to remove encroachments

Lokayukta P. Vishwanath Shetty on Thursday pulled up civic agencies – BDA, BBMP and BWSSB – for the lack of upkeep of lakes. Hearing a complaint by United Bengaluru, a group of citizens fighting for the city's lakes, the Lokayukta on Thursday gave three months to BDA and two months to BBMP, to survey all the lakes in their custody, identify and remove encroachments.

The Lokayukta will also issue a notice to BWSSB to submit an action plan on stopping the inflow of sewerage into lakes. United Bengaluru has been asked to submit suggestions for rejuvenation of lakes.

Before the next hearing on April 15, the Lokayukta will inspect lakes along with United Bengaluru.

In a press statement, United Bengaluru said that the Lokayukta will visit Byramangala reservoir and Vrushabhavathi Valley on January 31, and Talaghatapura, Sompura, Gubbalala, Vasanathapura and Sarakki lakes on February 2.

Noted freedom fighter H.S. Doreswamy, who is a part of United Bengaluru, is happy that the Lokayukta had recognised the efforts of citizens. “We will be seeking out experts, like noted environmentalist Yellappa Reddy and Dr. T.V. Ramachandra of IISc., and work on a comprehensive plan for rejuvenation of lakes and submit the same to the Lokayukta,” he said.
