A Columbia woman said she was scammed out of more than $8,000 by a man who approached her outside her home and offered to pave her driveway, according to police.

The scam was reported Tuesday to the Columbia Police Department. The 61-year-old victim told officers a man approached her as she was going inside her home just off North Main Street and said he could pave her driveway for $500, according to a police incident report.

“The subject used some unknown black tar-like material on the driveway of the victim,” the report states.

After only an hour, the man told the woman he was finished, and that she owed him $8,300, police said.

The woman agreed to pay the amount and drove the man to her bank on North Main Street, where she withdrew the cash and gave it to him, the report states. She drove back home, called her daughter and said she believed she was scammed.

The victim told officers the man who scammed her went into a gas station near the bank. Officers are working to obtain surveillance footage of the scammer from the gas station.
