A 9-year-old boy beat tens of thousands of third-graders when he won a national prize for growing an enormous cabbage.

The massive leafy green vegetable weighed a whopping 29 pounds.

Tino Bruno grew the plant from a tiny seedling he was given last January during a class field trip.

"Once we planted it, watered it, fertilized it, picked off snails and bugs, it grew and grew," said Tino. "I put it in our recess yard in a wagon, so when the kids had recess, they could go and see it."

After months of care, the seed grew into a 29.5-pound cabbage that measured 38 inches in circumference.

Tino submitted photos of his project to the Bonnie Plants’ 3rd Grade Cabbage Program, a nationwide competition that selects a winner from 48 different states.

The cabbage beat more than 41,0000 entries in California, and Tino was awarded $1,000.

The now-fourth grader will receive his prize in February. What does he plan to do with it?

"I'm going to save it for college, but first, buy a Lego set," Tino said.
