HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Rivals keep close eye on each other

Jefferson and New Boston Huron did not face each other Wednesday night, but got to keep an eye on what each other

They were in the same building, but not on the same mat.

Jefferson and New Boston Huron, the teams who have captured the last six Huron League wrestling championships, both competed in a league double-dual meet Wednesday but did not face each other.

“I won’t lie, I was watching a couple of their matches,” Jefferson coach Mike Humphrey said.

The teams had very similar results.

Jefferson beat St. Mary Catholic Central 84-0 and Milan 76-6.

Huron blanked SMCC 76-0 and topped Milan 70-6.

Both are now 4-0 in the league.

SMCC and Milan both had multiple voids in their lineups so only three wrestlers for both Jefferson and Huron got to wrestle twice.

Adam Beaver (171) logged a pair of pins for Jefferson (13-2 overall), Alek Poremba (152 recorded a pin and major decision and Tyler Hattley (285) won twice.

Drake Pauwels (189) racked up the 150th and 151st wins of his career with a pair of pins for Huron. Kyle Short (285) also won twice for the Chiefs (19-1 overall).

Flat Rock, Airport roll

RIVERVIEW — Airport and Flat Rock both won both of their matches Wednesday.

Airport beat Grosse Ile 71-0 and Riverview 48-24. Flat Rock topped Riverview 36-31 and Grosse Ile 52-6.

Freshman Trent Books (125-130) led Airport with two pins. Jon Fritz (135), Arthur Calloway (140), Justin Chambless (145), Mike Foor (189), Blake Piette (119), Kyle Bergmooser (171), Sam Johnson (285) and Spencer Fritz (112) also went 2-0 for the Jets (10-5 overall, 3-1 in the Huron League).

Flat Rock crawled within one of .500 at 9-10 as Andrew Thayer (112), Joey Motyka (135), Joe Kidd (140), Christian Santilli (160), Ryan Myre (189) and Xavier Curtis (215) all won twice.

Monroe getting healthy

YPSILANTI — Things are falling into place for Monroe.

The Trojans got Ethan Hoffner down to 189 pounds for the first time this season and expect Regional qualifier Jacob Smith (171) back next week.

They beat Ypsilanti 60-12 and Ann Arbor Skyline 58-18 Wednesday night as Nathan Puccetti (112), Jayston Dye (119), Julian Sumers (125), Jarrod Kimble (135), Wyatt Head (140), Logan Gonzales (145), Adam Bailey (152) and Dom Cusumano (160) went 2-0.

Ida wins twice

ONSTED — Seth Barnier (171) recorded two pins and Hunter Assenmacher (103-112) won twice to push his record to 28-0 as Ida cruised past Onsted 51-15 and Blissfield 51-19 Wednesday.

Also winning twice for the 13-5 Blue Streaks were Reid Woemer (103-112), Brandon Wireman (119-125), Hunter Schafer (125-130), Kalim Low (140), Joe Barton (145), Jarod Woelmer (152) and Park Henry (160).

Vikings sweep

DUNDEE — Dundee handily swept a tri-meet at home Wednesday, defeating Hillsdale 82-0 and routing Brooklyn Columbia Central 84-0

Going 2-0 for Dundee were Gabe Massingil (103), Austin Fietz (119), Tyler Swiderski (125), Jonny White (125), Christian Killion (130). Stoney Buell (135), Grant Ott (140), McCallister McAvoy (145), Zac Bellaire (152), Tylor Orrison (160), Jaxon Guinn (171), Kyle Motylinski (189), Brandon Whitman (215) and Kyle Rinehart (285). Orrison picked up his 100th career fall Wednesday.

Dan Jaworski went 1-0 at 130.
