A group of students of Dhaka University (DU) on Wednesday issued a 48-hour ultimatum for punishment to the Chhatra League men who assaulted demonstrators demanding cancellation of affiliated colleges.
Hundreds of students from different departments of the university demonstrated inside the VC office where they placed their three-point demand.
They ended their programmes following assurance by university Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman.
Their three-point demands are forming a probe body incorporating two student representatives to investigate the incident of attack and sexual harassment of students by a group of Chhatra League activists and resignation of the proctor if he fails to publish the probe report within 48 working hours.
On behalf of the protestors Masud Al Mahdi, a post-graduate student of the Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) placed students' demands.
In reply to students' demand University VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman said, "We will form a probe committee to investigate the matter within 24 hours and will take steps to meet students' demand."
"Students were also asked to submit a formal letter of complaint attaching the photos and video footage of Monday's incident to verify that Chhatra League leaders had harassed the female students and picked Sadik forcefully into the VC office and assaulted him there.
Earlier, at around 11:00am students formed a human chain at the altar of Aprajeya Bangla protesting attack on students and sexual harassment of female students by BCL activists before they entered the room of the proctor. As the gate was locked to obstruct the protesting students to entering the proctor's office, the protestors then stormed into the building breaking the collapsible gate and then started demonstrating in front of the office room of the proctor.
They were chanting slogans demanding temporary suspension of the BCL leaders who foiled the sit-in of the DU students, also asked the reason of quizzing Sadik, one of the main coordinators of Monday's movement, by keeping him in the custody.
In the face of protest, the proctor then assured them of forming a probe body immediately but the students rejected his assurance as he could not mention any specific timeframe. The proctor also could not properly explain the reason behind handing over Sadik to the law enforces.
After confining proctor for four hours hundreds of students then marched to the VC office at around 4:30 pm as the proctor expressed his failure to solve the issue.
The VC appeared at the scene after three and a half hours of demonstration and assured the students of fulfilling all their demands by the given time.
Students also placed specific names of those who assaulted and harassed female protestors. The names include Bangabandhu Hall BCL General Secretary Al Amin Rahman, Mohosin Hall General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Suny, Zahrul Hoque Hall President Suhanur Rahman Sohan, Rokeya Hall BCL unit President Lipi Akter, Kuwait Maitree Hall General Secretary Srabonti Shyla and Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall President Benjir Hossain Nishi. Some teachers, however, alleged that the protestors hurled slangs at teachers including Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani.
Meanwhile, Moshiur Rahman Sadik who led the movement was released after 24 hours of his being detained. He was released after police quizzed him at the Shahbagh Police Station for his alleged involvement in creating unrest in the university.
